Two dozen students from San Diego State University ventured into a world that changed theirs forever. Stepping into the seething desolation of the California prison system, they explored eight different prisons over five grueling days. They met men and women who have paid with the last ounce of their humanity for crimes committed half a century ago, punished far beyond their guilt at a cost of billions of dollars to a near-bankrupt California. They found humanity and compassion where they thought none existed. They stepped into a world largely unknown to them, despite years of study and exposure to volumes upon volumes of criminological literature. They were hardly prepared for this blunt and unapologetic encounter with the stark and often brutal realities of prison. They were, at different times, surprised, disillusioned, saddened, and enraged by their discoveries. But most of all, they were fully and completely engaged–by a world they had not imagined and feelings they had never expected. Follow them on their weeklong trek through the bowels of the California correctional system See what they saw; hear what they heard; and learn what they learned–about crime, criminals, prisons, and most importantly, themselves.
